The Process of Color-Painted Steel Coil

Stage 1- Cleaning the strip
The cold rolled coil is cleaned of any impurities and oil to ensure uniformity and that nothing gets trapped between the layers that could have an adverse effect on the finished product. It also ensures the subsequent layers stick fast.
Cleaning can be done in several ways such as brushing, a chemical bath or alkaline dip, a water bath etc. It is then rinsed to remove any cleaning impurities and residues.

Stage 2- Zinc alloy application
This layer can be 100% zinc but is often made up of zinc & aluminium and the exact proportion of each is unique depending on the supplier and the product. Some products also include magnesium in this alloy for additional properties.
Typically, this metallic coating is added to the steel before the coil arrives at the paint coating plant but it can be added as a pre-process on the same line before the subsequent paint layers are added.

Stage 3- Surface treatment
This chemical conversion coating stage is critical to ensuring the primer and the paint are securely bonded with the steel. The chemicals used, such as alkaline oxides, change the surface properties of the previous zinc layer.

Stage 4- Rinsing & drying
Although some surface treatments don't require a rinsing stage, for others, this is done to ensure that the material presented for primer application is free from any chemical residues and is fully dry to ensure secure bonding of the subsequent layers.

Stage 5- Primer application
The primer coating may be added to one or both sides of the steel and prepares the steel sheet to ensure the finished paint layer sticks fast.

Stage 6- Drying, curing & cooling
This ensures the primer is fully hardened, clean, dry and the correct temperature before the application of the next layer to ensure optimum properties are upheld.

Stage 7- Finished paint coating and backing coat
Typically, the front and the back of the steel have different coatings as they each meet different end user needs.

Whilst some processes can apply the layers at the same time and cure, cool and dry them at the same time, other processes apply them separately and dry, cure and cool in between each layer.
This is the final painting stage in a typical two coat paint system.

Stage 7+ Optional clear protective coat
For a three coat paint system a clear protective coat is added on top of the final layer of paint. It is only added to some premium products and gives additional protective benefits to the product, particularly for uv.

Stage 8- Drying, curing & cooling
This ensures the paint is fully hardened, clean and dry, ready for rerolling and then to be shipped to the customer.
The addition of a surface pattern i.E. Embossing, can occur at this stage, just before the paint is fully cooled and hardened.

Q: What is coating of steel?

A: Steel is coated with zinc to help prevent corrosion. Zinc forms a barrier, defending the metal itself from rust and other forms of corrosion. Zinc reacts with oxygen when exposed to the atmosphere, thus creating zinc oxide.

Q: What is the difference between coated steel and stainless steel?

A: Powder coating adds a durable, protective epoxy or polymer layer over the steel, while stainless steel includes metal additives into the composition of the steel to improve durability and corrosion resistance. Powder coated steel is typically made up of iron, carbon and other materials which can rust.

Q: What is the process of coated steel?

A: There are four commonly used methods of applying metal coating to steel surfaces. These are hot-dip galvanizing, thermal spraying, electroplating and sherardizing. The latter two processes are not used for structural steelwork but are used for fittings, fasteners and other small items.

Q: What are the uses of colour coated coil?

A: Colour-coated coils and sheets are widely used pre-engineered building materials. It is a versatile product used for various applications, including home appliances, furniture, airports, industrial, and warehouses.

Q: How to tell if steel is coated?

A: This is a simple and non-destructive way to identify the presence of a coating material on steel. Use a magnetic thickness gauge to measure the thickness of the coating over the steel surface. This method can indeed confirm whether a coating is present on the steel, yet it doesn't say what coating it is.

Q: Is coated steel safe?

A: Since it requires acidity to break down the zinc coating on galvanized steel, and most garden soils are neutral, there's little to no impact. Zinc is an essential plant micronutrient and a normal part of our soil.

Q: Why is steel coated blue?

A: The resulting protective patina helps provide better protection against corrosion. Some manufacturers refer to the blueing process as "black oxidizing." This term recognizes that the protective coating forms from a chemical reaction on the surface of the metal.

Q: How long does coated steel last?

A: Most powder coating applications last for 15-20 years. These coatings are highly resistant to weather, chemicals, and corrosion, and offer electrical insulation, and vibration and sound deadening benefits.

Q: Is coated steel rust proof?

A: Powder-coated steel is highly resistant to rust in most cases, so it won't develop unsightly rust patches or leave red streaks on a patio or building facade. However, if it sustains damage, small cracks in the coating may appear, admit moisture and allow rust to form.

Q: How do you clean coated steel?

A: One of the most effective methods of cleaning powder-coated metal is via pressure washing. Its power is useful when removing dirt and debris, but it's important that you keep it on a low pressure setting. If it's too high, it can damage the coating. Additionally, always use filtered water with this method.

Q: How do you remove coating from steel?

A: Despite the strong bond powder coat has to the underlying metal, it can be removed. There are four established ways to remove powder coating: chemical stripping, thermal stripping, abrasive (aka sandblasting or media blasting), and laser removal.
